The History of EDDIE
We must go back in the early days of the band when we want to find out how EDDIE came to his name. Dennis Wilcock (Singer in early days) had the habit to insert horrorelements in his stage acting. One very importent element was that he put a sword in his mouth. Then he spit artificial blood when the song "IRON MAIDEN" was played. This was for Steve Harris so great that he wanted to hold it in the show on every case.
Now was the time of Dave Beasley, or later Dave Lights. He has the responsibility for the light-and pyroeffects and he created "THE HEAD". A masque which spitted blood and smoke while the musicians play "IRON MAIDEN". The Head`s name changed into EDDIE (because of a joke): " A woman had born a baby that was only a head.The doctor said to her that she shouldn`t fall in sorrows because the body would grow again in the next 5 years. One day this child, named EDDIE, was sitting near the fireplace and his father came and said to him: " Son, today is a very special day. It`s your birthday and we`ve got a super surprise for you. " " Oh", EDDIE says, " hopefully it is not again a hat..."
Now the optical appearence of EDDIE on the albumcover must be worked out. IRON MAIDEN-Manager Rob Smallwood had the idea to invite the artist Derek Riggs, from whom he had seen a poster. This man presented a lot of Science fiction-drawings but they didn`t mirrored the band-image. Only a wildeyed mutant answered all requirements. This mutant adorned then the first LP EDDIE was born.
Over the next years EDDIE was changed permanently and there were many sorrows about him because his body went more and more. This trend has its climax in the artwork of the album "SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON". But on the cover of "NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING" EDDIE had again a super state of health. IRON MAIDEN without EDDIE !!! IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME!!!
